Some people plan their careers. I just showed up — and hospitality never let me leave.
Denise Simmons
Founder DMS Hospitality
Fresh out of college, I walked through the doors of San Francisco's iconic Stanford Court Hotel as an admin assistant with no grand master plan. What I found was a world that felt completely, naturally mine.
I grew fast — from business transient sales to national accounts with the Kimpton Group — and eventually packed my bags for New York City, where I opened the GSO for Destination Hotels, then brought Wynn/Encore's presence to the market. I'll be the first to tell you: everyone should live in New York at some point. I lived it fully. My final hotel chapter was with TAJ, and then life, beautifully and unexpectedly, rewrote the script.
A California girl married to a New Yorker, I headed home to San Diego — this time with a four-year-old in tow and, in true plot-twist fashion, a surprise set of twin boys on the way. When a dear mentor and former colleague suggested I try my hand at recruiting, it didn't feel like a career change. It felt like play.
Connecting sharp, talented people with the right opportunities lit me up the same way hospitality always had. One year later, in 2012, DMS Hospitality was born. The M in DMS? That's Miller — my maiden name, and a reminder that in this industry, roots matter, and people remember.
Today, I work with luxury resorts, Michelin-starred restaurants, private membership clubs, and luxury ranches — partnering with teams who care deeply about the people they bring on board. My clients trust me not just to find candidates, but to find the right ones — the ones who will genuinely gel with the culture they've worked so hard to build. That trust means everything to me.
When I'm not making those connections, you'll find me at a basketball game, a football field, or a competitive cheer competition (three very active boys will turn you into a serious fan). I unwind in the kitchen, have recently discovered a love for pickleball and Mahjong, and share all of it with my family and friends and our beloved maltipoo, Zack.
There is nothing more gratifying than knowing you made the match that changed someone's career. That feeling never gets old.
